For some, having an obsession with clothes and a hobby of fashion may seem superficial. Society is fickle and often associates fashion with runway models, expensive brands and superficial attitudes. For me, fashion is so much more than that. Fashion is how I encapsulate who I am. It is the billboard for Sydney Snelten, a personal business card reflecting who I am.
Clothes create a wordless means of communication that we all understand. It's not just about choosing the right garment or encompassing the latest trend, it is about the confidence you have to carry it.
I personally would rather buy a new shirt than pay for a meal sometimes. Yep, I said it. Sure, I have dreams of walking into a Chanel store and picking out a bag or strutting through town in a pair of red bottoms, but it's much more than that. For me, fashion isn't just about having new clothes and staying up on the latest trends. Fashion to me is being able to express myself and utilize it as a creative outlet from the rest of the hustle and bustle of my daily life. Fashion to me is my identity. It defines who I am and who I aspire to be. Fashion is like a snow flake, everyone sees and portrays it differently and that is the best part. It is unique to you.
Fashion to me means:
Getting people to talk and ask questions
Expressing my uniqueness
Daring to be different
Expanding my taste and boundaries
Representing my personality for the world to see
Whether it's a fictional character like Carrie Bradshaw making her way through life or a real life icon like Coco Chanel sharing her infinite wisdom, there is so much to learn and appreciate about fashion. Some of my favorites put it this way:
“You either know fashion or you don’t.” — Anna Wintour
“I think there is beauty in everything. What ‘normal’ people would perceive as ugly, I can usually see something of beauty in it.” — Alexander McQueen
“Shoes transform your body language and attitude. They lift you physically and emotionally.” — Christian Louboutin
“I like my money right where I can see it: hanging in my closet.” — Carrie Bradshaw
“I have always believed that fashion was not only to make women more beautiful, but also to reassure them, give them confidence.” — Yves Saint Laurent
“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” — Rachel Zoe
“Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” — Bill Cunningham
“Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.” — Ralph Lauren
This was something I felt needed to be said. We live in a world of fashion and beauty bloggers and can get so easily caught up in the meaning behind it all. I'm sure there are people out there that criticize me, think I'm superficial or full of myself or even silly for spending my time creating a fashion blog and empire, but I want to clear up any misconceptions and reflect and explain on my reason for doing this and the joy that it brings me.
So you know what, this is me and all my glory. Thank you fashion for giving me the confidence to be who I want to be.
